Phone Theft Protection in India: Find My Setup, IMEI Block and Insurance Guide
Losing a phone to theft in India hurts twice: once for the device, and again for the UPI apps, OTPs and personal data sitting inside it. This guide covers everything a phone owner should do before and after a theft, from setting up Find My iPhone and Find My Device to blocking your IMEI on Sanchar Saathi, filing an FIR, understanding what insurance actually covers, and making sure a thief can never resell or misuse your phone.

Why Theft Protection Matters More Than a Case
A stolen phone in India is rarely just a hardware loss. Your UPI apps, bank OTPs, email, photos and saved cards all travel with it. A cover protects the screen; theft protection protects your money and identity. The good part is that almost every layer of protection is free and takes under thirty minutes to set up. Do it the day you buy the phone, not the day you lose it.
Set Up Find My iPhone and Find My Device Today
On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Find My, and switch on Find My iPhone, Find My network and Send Last Location. Also turn on Stolen Device Protection under Face ID and Passcode; it adds a security delay before anyone can change your Apple ID password from an unfamiliar location. On Android, go to Settings, then Google, and make sure Find My Device is on (on newer versions Google calls this Find Hub). Also enable Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock if your phone has them. Finally, note your IMEI by dialling *#06# and keep the phone's box and bill safely, because the IMEI is printed on both and you will need it for blocking and for any insurance claim.
The First Hour After Theft: Lock and SIM Block
Speed matters most in the first hour. From any other phone or computer, log in to iCloud Find My or Google Find My Device and mark the phone as lost. This locks the screen, shows a contact message and keeps location tracking on. Do not erase the device yet, because erasing can end your ability to track it on some phones. Next, call your operator, whether Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL, and block the SIM immediately. This is critical because bank OTPs go to that SIM. Ask for a duplicate SIM on the same number as soon as possible, since your UPI and banking apps are linked to it.
Block the IMEI on Sanchar Saathi and File an FIR
Go to the government's Sanchar Saathi portal (sancharsaathi.gov.in) or app and use the CEIR module to block your stolen phone's IMEI. Once blocked, the handset stops working on every Indian mobile network, even with a new SIM, which kills most of its resale value. You will need a copy of your police complaint, your ID and the IMEI number. For the police report, file an FIR or e-FIR at the nearest police station or your state's online portal. Many people skip this step, but an FIR is usually mandatory for a theft insurance claim, and some insurers accept only an FIR, not a simple lost report. If the phone is recovered later, the same portal lets you unblock the IMEI.
Does Insurance Cover Phone Theft?
Your manufacturer warranty never covers theft; warranty is only for manufacturing defects. Theft is covered only if you bought a separate mobile insurance or device protection plan that specifically includes theft or burglary, and many cheaper plans cover accidental and liquid damage only. Read the coverage terms before you pay the premium. Typical conditions include reporting the theft to police within a fixed window, often 24 to 48 hours, submitting the FIR copy, and paying a deductible, meaning you bear a part of the claim amount. Payouts also apply depreciation, so an older phone fetches a lower settlement. Exact premiums, deductibles and exclusions vary widely, so check with the provider before buying. If your phone is on EMI, remember the EMIs continue even after theft, which is exactly why theft coverage is worth considering on expensive phones.
Protect UPI, Banking Apps and Your Data
After the SIM block, secure your money. Call your bank's helpline to disable UPI and block any cards saved on the phone. If any fraudulent transaction has already happened, call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 or report it on cybercrime.gov.in immediately, because early reporting improves the chance of freezing the money. From another device, change your email password first, since email can reset everything else, then sign out of all sessions in your Google or Apple account settings. Re-register WhatsApp on your duplicate SIM to log the old device out. If your data was backed up and the phone is clearly gone, you can then remotely erase it.
Stop Thieves From Reselling Your Phone
Modern phones are hard to resell if you prepare. Activation Lock on iPhone and Factory Reset Protection on Android keep the phone tied to your Apple ID or Google account even after a factory reset. This is why thieves send fake messages like "your iPhone has been found, sign in here". Never enter your Apple ID or Google password on such links; that phishing attempt is the only way they can unlock your phone. Combined with a CEIR IMEI block, a stolen phone becomes nearly worthless in India. And if you are buying a second-hand phone yourself, check its IMEI on the Sanchar Saathi KYM (Know Your Mobile) service first so you never pay for a blacklisted device.
Quick Checklist
Before theft: enable Find My or Find My Device, turn on Stolen Device Protection or Theft Detection Lock, note your IMEI with *#06#, keep the box and bill, and decide if a theft insurance plan makes sense for your phone's value. After theft: mark the phone as lost, block the SIM, block the IMEI on Sanchar Saathi, file an FIR, disable UPI and cards, call 1930 if money moved, change your email password, and inform your insurer within the claim window. Print this list or save it on a family member's phone, because you will not have yours when you need it.
